Libya, Africa and The West - Conclusion

Featuring:
Ambassador David Mack

David Mack: Well, I do want to thank the speakers and, particularly, the chairman of the three panels that we threw in without too much guidance, and Ambassador Cecil, David Goldwyn from the US-Libya Business Association, and finally, Ambassador Cohen - drew on their great expertise on both Libya and the continent of Africa, to provide us with some guidance and to help motivate and direct the conversation of the various speakers.

I might just say that as we are able to conclude a little bit early, you still have one chance on your way out to buy some of the publications that are available from the Middle East Institute, including, I might say, a compact disc that has all 20 articles on Libya that were published in the Middle East Institute, the first one going all the way back to 1947 in the Middle East Journal. For those who have a scholarly interest in Libya, this is a real treasure trove, all-in-one CD.

The most recent issue of the Middle East Journal, I might note, has not only the article by Ronald Bruce St. John, one of our speakers on the Libyan Economy, but also has got an exceptionally good article by a Norwegian political scientist that lays out, I think in very logical terms - and to me, very persuasive terms - the reasons why Libya decided to forego a nuclear weapons option and the various processes, and this is based both upon public sources and upon interviews that he has had over the past years in Tripoli. So I recommend that to you.

Finally, I want to thank the audience for their abundant patience and for the very good questions that we have had, and we hope that this will only be the first step in continuing this dialogue between Libya and the United States.
