Cautious Optimism: Chances for Cypriot Reconciliation

Reunification of Cyprus tops the agenda of newly elected president of Greek Cyprus, Demetris Christofias, and his pledges to open dialogue with the Turkish Cypriots have cast a hopeful ray of light onto what has long been a dismal situation. Christofias’ election is fraught with irony; he is a Soviet-trained member of the Progressive Party of Working People (AKEL), a Greek-Cypriot Communist party, which enjoys close relations with Russia. Cyprus is now the first European Union member with a Communist party in control of the presidency.

As the still simmering French riots and Dutch uneasiness remind us, even the most secularized countries in Europe are struggling to make sense of their own national identity in the face of mounting Islamism and the threat of terrorism among their own citizens of Muslim and Arab origin.

Opening the panel, Ambassador Charles O. Cecil encouraged all participants to consider the implications of the topic of “Libya’s Relations with Africa and the West.” His remarks were basically three fold. First, he discussed Libya’s deep historical roots in Africa. He noted that Libya had long ties with sub-Saharan Africa, which even predated the arrival of Arabs in North Africa.
