Experience

• Reporter and editor for The Washington Post (1966-1999, 2003); covered the war in Iraq for the Post (2003) and served as diplomatic, national security, and Middle East correspondent (based in Cairo)
• Author of a number of books, including Inside the Mirage: America's Fragile Partnership with Saudi Arabia (2004), Madeleine Albright and the New American Diplomacy (2000), Egypt After Nasser (1989), and Understanding Islam (1995)
• Current research on history of US engagement in Saudi Arabia and US-Saudi relations
