- Served on the executive boards of the Center for Iranian Research and Analysis and the International Society for Iranian Studies
- Held fellowships at the University of Texas at Austin and Harvard University
- Author of numerous books and articles on Iranian society and politics, including "Iranian Intellectuals and the West: The Tormented Triumph of Nativism" (1996)
