Library FAQ

 

Q: What are the library's operating hours?
A:The library's hours are 12 p.m. - 4 p.m. and
5 p.m. - 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
Friday's hours are 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. - 5 p.m.

Q: Can I access the library's catalog online?
A: Yes. You can access the library's catalog here.

MEI members can create online accounts that will allow them to place books on reserve. If you wish to create an account please contact the librarian.

Q: How long may I borrow a book?
A: Books can be borrowed for one month. If the book borrowed is requested by another patron it must be returned to the library within one week. Books can be renewed three times. Books may be renewed in person, by phone or e-mail.

Q: Can I borrow journals, reference items or maps?
A: Journals, reference items and maps do not circulate. Patrons may use the library's photocopy machine. Photocopies are 15 cents a page.

Q: What electronic resources does the George Camp Keiser Library offer?
A: The library houses two public terminals for patrons to use. Patrons may access the library's online catalog, Index Islamicus , and the Middle East Economic Digest (MEED) . In addition, the library owns several CD-Roms. A wi-fi access point is available for library patrons with laptops.

Q: I am not a member of MEI, may I use the library?
A: In-house use of the library is free and open to the public. Borrowing privileges are reserved for MEI members. To learn more about membership please click here .

Q: Does the George Camp Keiser Library accept donations?
A: The library welcomes donations. However, the library cannot guarantee that it will keep all donated items. The library is also grateful for financial contributions from its patrons.

Q: May I bring food or beverages into the library?
A: No. Food and beverages are not allowed in the library because they may damage our books. Patrons are encouraged to eat and drink in the garden in front of the library. Patrons may also purchase beverages from a vending machine located in the Middle East Institute.

Q: I am doing research on 'X' topic. Where should I begin?
A: Begin by consulting the librarian, Simon Braune. He can be reached via e-mail at: library@mideasti.org or by phone 202-785-0183. The library also offers a number of detailed research guides .

Q: I am looking for 'X' journal. Do you own it?
A: A list of the library's periodicals may be found

Q: May I have someone else return the books I borrowed?
A: In order to prevent potential mishaps we ask that you return the book yourself. If this poses
a problem for you please contact the librarian PRIOR to sending someone else to return your books.

Q: When I came to return my books the library was closed. May I leave them with someone else at MEI?
A: No. Other members of MEI cannot be held responsible for returning your books. Please contact the librarian if you cannot come to the library during its normal hours.

Q: How can I learn what articles have been published about 'X' topic?
A: The library offers in-house access to Index Islamicus online. Index Islamicus provides citations articles written about Islam and the Middle East from 1906 to the present. To learn more about this excellent resource please click here .

Q: How may I offer my assistance to the George Camp Keiser Library?
A: Please contact the librarian if you are interested in volunteering. The library offers internship opportunities to students and recent graduates.
