
The Middle East Institute is pleased to welcome Ambassador (ret) Harry J. Gilmore to discuss US interests in the Southern Caucasus. In 35 years in the Foreign Service, he focused on the former Soviet Union, Communist Eastern Europe, Germany and political-military affairs. His senior positions included: first United States Ambassador to Armenia; United States Minister and Deputy Commandant of the American Sector, Berlin; and Deputy Commandant for International Affairs, United States Army War College. He was the Chairman Allied Minister in Berlin the night the Berlin wall opened.
Ambassador Gilmore served as Dean of the Senior Seminar and Dean of Area Studies. Since his retirement, Ambassador Gilmore has focused on the South Caucasus (Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia). He was Program Chair for Caucasus Area Studies at the Foreign Service Institute from 1997-2002. He currently lectures and consults on the region.
