Syria's Terrorist War on Lebanon and the Peace Process

MEI Event
Syria's Terrorist War on Lebanon and the Peace Process

Featuring:

Marius Deeb
Apr 7 2005 - 12:00pm - 1:00pm

The February assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri represented, at very least, a major Syrian failure on the security front. The murder sparked large protests that drew worldwide attention to Syria’s continued military presence and controlling political interest in Lebanon. Under international pressure, the al-Asad regime agreed to begin withdrawing its military and intelligence forces from Lebanon. Considering Syria’s past efforts to perpetuate internal Lebanese divisions and the possible impact a withdrawal could have on Syria’s domestic politics, will Syria finally comply with Resolution 1559? If so, what would be the result for both Syria and Lebanon? If not, what is the proper policy response?

To speak on this developing situation, MEI is delighted to welcome Dr. Marius Deeb, author of several books, including Syria’s Terrorist War on Lebanon and the Peace Process. Dr. Deeb is a professor of Middle East and Islamic Studies at the School of Advanced International Studies of the Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Deeb was educated at the American University in Beirut before earning his doctorate degree from Oxford University.

Dr. Deeb will be available to discuss his book and answer any questions. For those interested in purchasing Dr. Deeb’s book, MEI will only accept cash or check.
