Since becoming Prime Minister, Tayyip Recep Erdogan has fostered speculation and concern about the possibility of Turkey sustaining a secular, progressive, democratic state while the mildly Islamist Justice and Development Party remains in power. Rusen Cakir is a senior correspondent at the Turkish Vatan Daily and program coordinator on democracy, civil society and the Muslim world for TESEV, a leading independent think tank based in Istanbul. Mr. Cakir will explain the recent developments in Turkey, the stability of the Turkish model of Islam, and the long-term implications for Turkish politics.
