Are the recent Kuwaiti elections a harbinger of political reform for the region at large? Is political empowerment for women, youth and other underrepresented groups a growing regional trend that can create spillover effects in countries like Egypt and Syria? If so, what will the impact and scope of the transformation be? The Middle East Institute is pleased to host a panel discussion on the topic of political reform in the Middle East with Nathan Brown, Jennifer McElhinny and Clayton Swisher.

Nathan Brown is a senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and on leave from his position as professor of political science and international affairs at George Washington University. Dr. Brown is a distinguished scholar on Arab constitutionalism, democratization and Middle East reform and the author of numerous articles and four books on Arab politics.

Jennifer McElhinny is the Managing Editor of The Middle East Journal. She recently visited Kuwait to track the progress of women’s political development. Her most recent perspective “Kuwaiti Elections: New Voices” is available on the MEI website.

Clayton Swisher is the Director of Programs at the Middle East Institute and the author of The Truth about Camp David, which has also been translated into Arabic. He recently returned from a visit to Lebanon and Cyprus.
