
In light of the reinstatement of full diplomatic relations between the United States and Libya, Dr. Diederik (Dirk) Vandewalle, Associate Professor of Government at Dartmouth College and a specialist in the political economy of North Africa, will provide analysis on this recent development and offer informed speculation about Libya's future prospects for change. Dr. Vandewalle will speak on the original research and personal interviews he conducted for his latest book,A History of Modern Libya. Vandewalle’s book is an account of Libya’s modern history, covering the period beginning in the 1900s through the Italian colonial period, Sanusi monarchy and Mu'ammar al-Qadhafi’s more than three-decade rule.
Dr. Vandewalle is also the author of Libya Since Independence: Oil and State-building and the editor of two volumes on Libya and North Africa. He was the recipient of a Social Science Research Council grant and two Regional Fulbright Awards for research in Morocco and Yemen (1997), and the Arab Gulf countries (2005-06), among a number of other awards. As part of his 2005-2006 Fulbright award, he spent 10 months in the Arab Gulf countries investigating the politics of economic reform and development in the region. Dr. Vandewalle has been a Visiting Scholar at the Harvard Institute for International Development and at Harvard's Center for Middle Eastern Studies.
