The once nomadic Kyrgyz are now major soap opera TV viewers: what has changed in the post-Soviet era in the society and culture of the Kyrgyz? Dr. Kathleen Kuehnast is a cultural anthropologist and consultant for the World Bank and research associate at the Institute for European, Russian & Eurasian Studies (IERES) at the George Washington University. Her grants include a Mellon Foreign Area Fellowship at the Library of Congress, Kennan Institute Research Fellowship, the Wenner-Gren Anthropological Fellowship for Dissertation Research, IREX Research Fellowship, the SSRC Doctoral Dissertation Research. Her publications include: the forthcoming Post-Soviet Women Encountering Transition: Nation Building, Economic Survival & Civic Activism (co-author), When Things Fall Apart: Qualitative Studies of Poverty in the Former Soviet Union (co-author, 2002), and A Generation at Risk: Children in the Central Asian Republics of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan (1997).
