The Middle East Institute is pleased to welcome former CIA operative and author Gary Berntsen to discuss his new book, Jawbreaker-The Attack on Bin Laden and Al Qaeda: A Personal Account by the CIA’s Key Field Commander.
Gary Berntsen served in the CIA’s Clandestine Service for more than twenty years. In this capacity, he stopped dozens of bombings and assassinations overseas, but his greatest challenge came when he was called on to lead the CIA’s efforts on the ground in Afghanistan to rid the country of the Taliban and al-Qaeda.
Berntsen’s book reveals the details of his role as the CIA’s key field officer in Afghanistan and the series of events involving the cornering of bin Laden at Tora Bora. Berntsen will offer his appraisal of the US government’s pursuit of al-Qaeda before and after the September 11th attacks.
