Since gaining independence, Azerbaijan's foreign policy agenda has been largely dominated by two main issues: how to regain the Armenian-occupied region of Nagorno-Karabakh, and what relationship should the state have with the millions of ethnic Azerbaijanis who live in the bordering provinces of Iran. Cameron S. Brown, Deputy Director of the Global Research in International Affairs (GLORIA) Center at the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya, Israel, and author of "Wanting to Have Their Cake and Their Neighbor's Too," which recently appeared in the Middle East Journal , will examine the two schools of thought that have emerged regarding these issues. Beyond their influence on foreign policy, the lecture will also consider how at their core, these competing visions reflect two opposing notions of what constitutes the Azerbaijani nation. Brown will also analyze Azerbaijan's aspirations in their regional context, discussing the impact on Iran, Armenia, and Georgia.
