Democracy, Women's Rights, and Reform: Recent Developments in Kuwait

Despite the opposition from Islamist groups in Kuwait, a historic vote isset to take place on women's suffrage in the coming months. Is therepotential for further change in Kuwait and how do Kuwaitis perceive thesereforms? Brian Katulis will share the findings of the recent FreedomHouse report "Women's Rights in Focus: Kuwait" based on a series ofnationwide focus groups conducted with ordinary Kuwaitis earlier thisyear, as part of a larger project on Women's Rights in the Middle East andNorth Africa. NDI's Senior Resident Representative in Kuwait, KelleyJones, will discuss recent developments in the country and place currentevents in perspective. Neil Hicks, Director of International Programs forHuman Rights First, will explain the fundamentals of civil society in Kuwait and compare Kuwait's record with other Gulf states.
