Dangerous Alliances: Civil Society, Media, and Democracy in North Africa

Featuring:

Dr. Lise Garon
Dec 15 2003 - 12:00pm - 6:00pm

The countries of the Maghreb – Tunisia, Algeria, and Morrocco – are widely considered the most stable, democratic, and progressive regimes of the Arab and Muslim world. But a deeper analysis finds that these states are clearly autocratic, argues Dr. Lise Garon, Professor of Political Communication, Laval University, Quebec and chair of the International Political Science Association's Research Committee on Political Processes in North Africa. Dr. Garon will explain the government’s manipulation of civil society and media, drawing from her recent work, Dangerous Alliances, Civil Society, the Media, and Democratization in North Africa.
