Saudi Arabia is a young nation with an ancient past and a closed and highly conservative society that is puzzling to many in the West. The Middle East Institute is pleased to welcome author, teacher and former diplomat David Long to discuss the cultural and social framework of the Kingdom and his newest book The Culture and Customs of Saudi Arabia.

David Long is a consultant on Middle East and Islamic politics, concentrating on Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, and on international terrorism. He served as a diplomat with the US Department of State for 30 years and been an adjunct professor at Georgetown, George Washington and American Universities and the Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies. He has published several books including The Government and Politics of the Middle East and North Africa, Gulf Security in the Twenty-First Century, and The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
