Book Launch Featuring Marvine Howe on Morocco

MEI Event
Book Launch Featuring Marvine Howe on Morocco

Featuring:

Marvine Howe
Jun 7 2005 - 12:00pm - 1:00pm

Morocco’s monarchy under King Hassan laid the groundwork for the open, pro-Western nation Morocco is today albeit at the expense of human rights. Under Mohammed VI, measures taken to open the political system have allowed moderate Islamists to make significant gains in recent elections. But a burgeoning Islamist movement and extremists with possible Al-Qaeda ties threaten to imperil the monarchy just as it is beginning to transform Morocco from an autocracy into a full-fledged democracy. How can Morocco successfully embrace its links to the Western and Islamic worlds? What effects will Islamists have on Morocco’s modernization and democratization?

MEI is pleased to host author Marvine Howe to discuss the roots of the Islamist movement and its impact on democratic reform based on her new book Morocco: The Islamist Awakening and Other Challenges. Ms. Howe began her career as a journalist covering Morocco’s struggle for independence. Ms. Howe has reported for from Africa, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East and the Balkans and served as The New York Times bureau chief in Rio de Janeiro, Lisbon, Beirut, Ankara, and Athens. Copies of Morocco: The Islamist Awakening and Other Challenges will be available for purchase after the event.
