Advancing Women's Rights in Egypt

Featuring:

Dr. Mona Zulficar
Jun 28 2005 - 12:00pm - 1:00pm

Egyptian lawyer and human rights’ advocate Dr. Mona Zulficar will discuss Egypt’s current family law code and how it impacts women’s legal standing.

Dr. Zulficar is a member of the National Council for Human Rights and the National Council for Women. She has long campaigned to improve human rights conditions and the legal status of Egyptian women and families. Her campaign for modification of the marriage contract and equal rights for women to divorce unilaterally stirred debates in the press and at the highest echelons of Egypt’s religious authorities. Dr. Zulficar has defended several human rights cases on a pro bono basis and continues to work for the establishment of the principles of freedom to marry and form a family as well as freedom of expression.

Dr. Zulficar is senior managing partner at the Shalakany Law Office, an Egyptian firm specializing in international corporate law practice. She serves as an advisor to the Ministry of Economy, the Capital Market Authority, the Ministry of Housing and the Central Bank of Egypt.
