MEI Event
1785: America's First Encounter with the Muslim World

Featuring:

Ambassador Richard Parker
May 7 2004 - 3:30pm - 9:00pm

America faced its first hostage crisis in 1785 when two American ships were captured off the coast of Portugal by Algerine Corsairs, better known as Barbary Pirates. MEI Adjunct Scholar Ambassador Richard Parker has made a thorough study of how this crisis and others with North African states were eventually resolved by diplomacy rather than force. Ambassador Parker will explain the fascinating history of this period and the legacy it has left on the America mind. A reception generously sponsored by the Algerian Embassy will follow the lecture.
